A Physician Medical Executive with 20+ years experience in oncology medical practice, translational/clinical research, clinical operations and executive leadership in an academic health care environment. As a clinician specializing in medical oncology and radiation oncology from 1984-2017, Steve focused his translational research efforts on the evaluation of the tumor microenvironment, signal transduction pathways involved in tumor response to therapies and proton therapy. He has authored more than 220 peer-reviewed original research articles and has experience in medical product development.
In his administrative roles, Steve was responsible for a large national and international oncology network, medical practice, interface with clinical operations, clinical trials, education quality/safety and professionalism. Now with recently completed federal government service as the 24th Commissioner of Food and Drugs he was responsible for running the Agency during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Steve now serves at the Chief Medical Officer for the Preemptive Medicine and Health Security Initiative for the innovation firm, Flagship Pioneering.
